Prague Bassoon Band was founded by Václav Vonášek in 2005. He has won numerous prestigious international competitions: (Talent Awards 2002 laureate of the Prague Spring International Competition, IDRS – Melbourne, Lodž). The other members are the foremost Czech bassoon players of the same generation – Martin Petrák, Radek Dostál and Václav Fürbach. All of them studied Academy of Perfoming Arts in Prague in the class of prof. František Herman and prof. Jiří Seidl. The incentive to establish the ensemble was to present the bassoon as an instrument with a remarkable sound as well as technical potential, which can best come to the fore when played in a chamber orchestra or as a solo instrument. The word “Band” in the name of the ensemble carries several meanings. First of all, it reflects the varying diversity of the repertoire of the ensemble, which focuses not only on interpretation of compositions within classical music but also includes musical pieces and transcriptions of music from nearly all styles – beginning with Baroque and Classicism, through the whole 20th century up to compositions in light genre. Also, the number of players for each performance can vary between two to four depending on a particular musical piece. The Prague Basson Band offers its audience a new sound horizon with multifarious and unorthodox repertoire.
